The Gentry Underground - Pick Me Up
go on downl0ad u pricks
UK South Coast band The Gentry Underground are one of the current bands that you must see before you die. Starting as a two piece, they have progressed into a four man line-up, but don’t let that suggest any form of normality. Trashy ‘solo-esque’ lead guitar, and stage manners that even Iggy himself might find disturbing, give TGU a fascinating feel that gives us, the listener, an urge to hunt down every past single or EP recorded from beneath the floorboards, in their own make-shift studio that is home to most of their records and a few other co-producing artists.
I’ve seen the band progress from pure Garage Rock with their 6 track EP’s, Trashland, followed by Noise – (both found on http://soundcloud.com/thegentryunderground/sets ) – onto one of the most interesting singles in many vinyl lovers collections. Requested in The UK, The US, Australia and oddly enough, Slovakia, a psychedelic colour hidden beneath several pieces of printed card, which sees the change of frontman for the first time, singing reverberated one liners that slide underneath guitar layers, with all the gloom, and emotional charge of a Joy Division record. With label artwork that echoes that of ‘Methodrone,’ their first vinyl release still provides a foot tapping intense listen.
Then to something completely unknown, that can only be loosely tied to the genre of Rock ‘n’ Roll or perhaps we can get away with calling it ‘experimental’. With a line-up shift around and a couple of additions, the band have created a brand new sound, and are bringing something new to live music which has been absent up until now. And the lead singer’s refusal to allow any release to come out on iTunes, digital media or CD; sticking to tape and vinyl, shrugs off any chance of this band being just another magazine overlook.
Currently touring Southampton and Winchester.
Find their vinyl here at: http://tgugarage.tumblr.com/ Or in Norman Records and Piccadilly Records.
